Our Church History | Calvary Baptist Church, Calvary, Georgia

A Heritage of Faith Since 1884

The history of Calvary Baptist Church in Calvary, Georgia, is deeply rooted in the early settlement of what is now Grady County. Our story reflects the faith, perseverance, and commitment to God's Word that helped shape the Baptist community in South Georgia.

The Early Settlers of Calvary

In the early 1800s, Elder William Hawthorne, a Baptist preacher, came to the Calvary area with a group of settlers who called the region the North Carolina Settlement. These pioneers sold their land in North Carolina to purchase land in South Georgia. Traveling with their families and belongings by covered wagon and horseback, they journeyed along what became known as the Hawthorne Trail in search of a better life.

These North Carolina settlers held firmly to their Baptist beliefs and carried with them a deep faith in the Lord. Their spiritual convictions helped establish a foundation for Baptist worship and fellowship in the growing community.

The first church in the area was Piedmont Primitive Baptist Church, constituted on August 28, 1828. Piedmont remains an active church today and stands as an important part of the area's early religious history.

The Revival of August 1884

In August 1884, a great revival came to Calvary. The meetings were organized by Robert Harris, a preacher and teacher in the community. A brush arbor was constructed to provide shelter for the services, where people gathered to hear the preaching of God's Word.

The revival brought a powerful response, with 52 people professing faith in Christ and being baptized in Herring Mill Pond. This season of spiritual renewal played an important role in the formation of Calvary Baptist Church.

The Organization of Calvary Baptist Church

Following the revival, J. J. White, a preacher and teacher in Calvary who served as a missionary for the Bowen Association, held a meeting to organize the Baptist believers in the community.

On August 24, 1884, the congregation adopted a Church Covenant, Articles of Faith, and Decorum, formally establishing the foundation of Calvary Baptist Church.

A Continuing Legacy of Faith

The founding of Calvary Baptist Church in 1884 marked an important milestone in the spiritual history of Calvary, Georgia. Built upon a heritage of biblical faith, Christian fellowship, and a commitment to the Gospel, the church became part of the continuing story of Baptist ministry in South Georgia.
